Bergamo, “City of the Thausand”: Art, History & Grace
Starting from its origin as part of the Transpadane Gaul area, Bergamo became a Roman Municipality in 49 B.C., thus preserving its original plant based on the cardo and decumanus axes. After the Roman Empire era, in 569 the city became part of the Lombardic land, turning then into one of the Franks cities and subsequently being part of the Republic of Venice territories in 1428. In addition to being one of the protagonists of so many historical periods, Bergamo is also known as the “City of the Thousand” due to the relevant presence of volunteers from the whole area on the occasion of Garibaldi’s expedition in the middle of the Renaissance period, in order to unify the Italian peninsula. Hanging around the historical Città Alta streets is a wonderful occasion to dedicate time to shopping in one the most special places of the “Made in Italy”, discovering churches, villas and courts belonging to different historical periods. The city is not only the symbol of “polenta” and of its iconic dessert “polenta e osei”, but it also is the birthplace of the famous “stracciatella” ice-cream. Alleys and historical little piazzas become open-air dining rooms of the numerous typical restaurants and traditional trattorie.
A funicular railway links the modern City to Città Alta. An evocative tract leads to the highest point of the City, Colle di San Vigilio, from where people can enjoy an extraordinary view that stretches for kilometres. The City is about 10 minutes away from Milan Bergamo Airport BGY and about 40 minutes away from the city of Milan, by Autostrada A4 -A4 Motorway- (Bergamo exit).
